Up to 2017 students were automatically entered for AS-level Maths in their Lower Sixth Year, as it was a compulsory part of the old A-level course. Once AS became stand alone and optional, Chosen Hill, like many other schools opted out to avoid increased costs. Exam fees vary from subject to subject but for Maths they are currently £59.70 for AS-Level and £124.10 for A-level. Under the old system AS exams were part of the full A-level and there was no separate charge. We did enter students for AS Maths in 2018 but were the only subject to do so. Nationally the Edexcel entries for AS Maths dropped from 12,657 in June 2018 to 4,446 in June 2021.

Though you will not be entered for AS-levels this year, past AS papers provide a very good measure of your progress half way through your A-level course.  You will have access to several sets of AS papers and the table above shows grade boundaries for exams actually taken. Because the October 2020 sitting was basically for students unhappy with the grade awarded by their school,  there would have been very few candidates sat the exams. The red line in the above table shows you the percentage of marks required for each pass grade averaged over the pre-pandemic sittings of 2018 and 2019.

The AS consists of two exams: a 2 hour Pure paper worth 100 marks and a 1 hr 15 min Mechanics & Statistics paper worth 60 marks (30 Mechanics & 30 Statistics). Note that in all sittings to date a Grade A has been awarded for less than 2/3 of the possible marks.
